no, no, no

There's this story. . .
"If a student was upset, then it was a bad idea," said Superintendent Brian Monahan of the North Rockland School District in New York City's northern suburbs.
Say what?
"We encourage our teachers to deliver the curriculum in a variety of ways, to go beyond just reading the textbook," the superintendent said. "We don't want to discourage creativity. But this obviously went wrong because the student was upset."
The student was. . . upset?

Cripes, man. You don't want to upset the students now, do you?

Whatever.

And what the fuck?

Okay, I'm willing to concede that in this particular instance the teacher in question may not have made, um, the best choice in terms of the methodology behind the delivery of that particular lesson.

Which is to say that perhaps the binding their hands and feet with tape thing could've ya know, been presented a bit differently. Generally it is considered to be in extremely poor taste to tie or bind your students. Hell, even every freakin' rookie knows that because it is, at least here anyways, illegal.

However. . .

That whole "mustn't upset the students" vibe that permeates the piece is highly disturbing and holy shit is it ever wrong.

An upset student is a challenged student, pushed to the brink of learning. The task of the teacher is to guide the student towards and through the lesson to be learned.

And to accept that the lesson to be learned may not always be one of our own choosing. We all go down a different path.

To accept anything less in our educational system is to accept serfdom over citizenship.

To accept anything less is to be one of the few:
When you're one of the few to land on your feet
What do you do to make ends meet?
Teach.
Make them mad, make them sad, make them add two and two.
Make them me, make them you, make them do what you want them to.
Make them laugh, make them cry, make them lie down and die.
No, it ain't me babe. No, it ain't me.
